Defects in Two-Dimensional Materials addresses the fundamental physics and chemistry of defects in 2D materials and their effects on physical, electrical and optical properties. The book explores 2D materials such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). This knowledge will enable scientists and engineers to tune 2D materials properties to meet specific application requirements. The book reviews the techniques to characterize 2D material defects and compares the defects present in the various 2D materials (e.g. graphene, h-BN, TMDs, phosphorene, silicene, etc.).

As two-dimensional materials research and development is a fast-growing field that could lead to many industrial applications, the primary objective of this book is to review, discuss and present opportunities in controlling defects in these materials to improve device performance in general or use the defects in a controlled way for novel applications.

 We are developing an advanced nanotechnology to extend our manufacturing capabilities. As an SPM (Scanning Probe Microscopy) Experimentalist, you will be part of the team developing this nanotechnology.


UHV SPM, Ultra High Vacuum Scanning Probe Microscopy, Equipment Construction, Experimental Design, Surface Chemistry, Surface Reaction, Molecular Manipulation, Transfer print patterning, Molecular Deposition.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Workstation Operation and Experimental Design
  • Operate SPM hardware and perform process development experiments
  • Work with the engineering team to propose, design, construct, and test nanoscale structures and devices
  • Rapid learning of the particular technical issues, challenges and solutions associated with this advanced nanotechnology
  • Document equipment modifications, experimental parameters, processes, and results
  • Assist in the specification and testing for new and upgraded engineering tools

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering or Mathematics and 2 years of UHV scanning probe microscopy experience during the degree, or Master’s in Engineering, Science or Mathematics and 2 years of UHV SPM experience
  • Meticulous, conscientious and detail-oriented
  • A quick learner
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to obtain a Canadian security clearance is required

Desired Skills and Experience

Each of these is a plus. This list is prioritized.

  • Experience with Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) or Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)
  • Experience in Cryogenic UHV experimentation
  • Experience in developing and operating a system that was reliant on previously unproven technology
  • Experience with Molecular Deposition
  • Experience with Molecular Manipulation
  • Experience with Transfer Printing
  • Experience with automated manufacturing systems
  • 1-3 years of Vacuum system work experience
  • Demonstrated interest in advanced technology

As an Electronics Engineer at CBN Nanotechnologies, you will play an integral part in exploring, developing, and testing cutting-edge technologies. Your work will be built upon a broad understanding of the physical sciences and unparalleled expertise in your chosen field. You will apply this broad understanding to developing the interfaces between the SPM and the computers controlling this instrument.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop an SPM controller as well as auxiliary equipment to interact with the microscope.
Develop high-speed RF and mixed-signal circuits, design PCBs, test these novel designs, and integrate them.
Develop and integrate FPGA systems.
Develop and review PCB designs.
Work closely with software developers and microscope operators to hone requirements for new hardware.

Required Skills and Experience

Good understanding and experience in Verilog.
Working knowledge of Python.
Experience with bringing up prototype circuits.
Hands-on work in analog and digital circuit design. PCB design, development, and testing.
Bachelor’s degree in related field is required.
At least 2 years of work experience in Electrical Engineering.

Preferred Skills and Experience

Work with radio frequency electronics and low noise electronics for measurement and characterization.
Designed multiple working high-speed analog, mixed-signal projects
Ability to develop robust electronic designs.
Demonstrated development of closed-loop control systems.
Work in computational modeling and testing of dynamic system performance.
